“Catfish Kray Blues Band: Splash (Circle 504 Records; 55:39 ***)

Active in Denver the past three decades, the Albert Collins-inspired guitarist Kray stretches the blues genre past the usual array of associations by employing jazz-trained singer Jesse Garland and capable horn soloists. Related to Wizard of Oz’s Dorothy, and Liza Minelli, Garland projects her built-in siren in gender-asserting songs borrowed from Shemekia Copeland and Lavay Smith. Kray’s most potent lines come on his slow, eight-minute slam at the boss, “Quittin Time Blues.” There, too, he effectively masks his singing as a strep-throated rasp."

Now on the list of 50 entrants for this years Grammy Award in contemporary Blues!!!

"young talent .... a notable amount of fire .... Kray .... his icy tone and phrasing recall one of his favorites, Albert Collins. vocalist Jesse Garland sings on most of the cuts ....two horn players shine. As a result, Kray and company make more than just a splash on this disc; they also make a few waves." From Westword, July 22, 2009 your new CD, Kelly Richey, "guitar goddess" of Cincinnati, Ohio
